Bernardus Marinus Pon, owner of Bernardus Lodge, dreams to make a Carmel Valley red wine equal to the finest from Bordeaux. It is a dream based on the foundation of tradition. Ben and his wife, Ingrid, chose the Carmel Valley because they believe in its potential to be the best viticultural appellation in America for traditional Bordeaux-style red wines. Moreover, the perfect environment to build Carmel Valley’s Premier Boutique Hotel; Ben's passion for Carmel Valley has now extended beyond wine. With the same pioneer spirit that created Bernardus Winery and Vineyards, Ben and Ingrid have now embarked upon the Luxury Resort that is Bernardus Lodge. The Bernardus Resort Hotel features a main lodge, with nine single- and two-story adobe-style guesthouses featuring Monterey Territorial-style architecture. Bernardus Lodge has been awarded a Forbes (Formally Mobil) 4-Star for the Resort, Spa and Restaurant, Marinus.In addition Bernardus Lodge is a recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award. The resort, which opened in 1999, is built in a Monterey Territorial-style, and features 57 suites arranged around croquet and bocce courts. Swimming and tennis is also available to guests. Award-wining dining and cellar and an exquisite 5,300 square-foot spa are the star attractions here, and the entire staff are known for unusually attentive service. The winery, opened in 1989, and creates wine from its own vineyards in Carmel Valley.
